Scientific name: Pomoxis nigromaculatus (Pomoxis means "sharp opercle (cheek)"; nigromaculatus means "black spotted")

Distribution:
The black crappie is a member of the sunfish family. It occurs throughout the United States from Maine to California and is particularly prevalent in the MidWest and South through Texas

Spawning vaires accorting to the latitude In the northern states its usaully spawns in May and June. In The South, spawning will take place earlier in the year starting as early as March. Favorable spawning temperatures range from 64 to 68º F. The male sweeps out a nest in sand or fine gravel and guards the nest and defends the young until they start to feed.

Fishing Both the Black and White Crappie are recognized as excellent game fish when taken on light tackle. Their mouths are very tender and the hook is likely to pull out unless care is taken in landing the fish. When fishing, the bait must be kept constantly moving. The best baits are small minnows, small maribou-covered jigs, plastic minnows, or small streamer flies cast along the outer edges of weed beds. The crappie bite best in the early morning. During the day they lie in weed beds in deep water Like trout and Bass they are more difficult to catch in summer because of the many small fish to feed on. Small minnows are used as bait in winter.
