All about Deer
There are at least fifty-three species of deer in the world. There are five of these species living in Alaska: caribou, Sitka black-tailed deer, reindeer, Roosevelt elk and moose .
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) live in large herds and roam the north country between their feeding and calving grounds. Both males and females have antlers with the largest numbers found in the northeast section of the state. Adult caribou weigh 300-500 pounds.
The Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) is very small and lives in the southcentral and southeastern coastal regions of the state. These creatures live in dense forests and live in medium-sized groups. Average weight of these deer is only 100 pounds.
The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) is the domesticated cousin of the caribou. People in the northwest part of the state raise these deer for commercial purposes. Both the reindeer and caribou prefer to eat lichens as their main food source.
Roosevelt elk (Cervus canadenis roosevelti) are found on several islands in Alaska. They were transplanted from Washington almost 70 years ago. These elk are about three-fourths the size of Alaskan moose. There is little hunting pressure on these elk because of the remote areas in which they live. There is fossil evidence that shows ancient elk once lived in Alaska.
Moose (Alces alces gigas) are the largest member of the deer family. An adult male can weigh up to 1600 pounds and stand six feet tall at the shoulder. Moose are found in most areas of mainland Alaska and are fond of young willows for their food. Only the males possess antlers. Moose are called elk in Europe.
