Fishing is the activity of catching fish. Fishing techniques include netting, trapping, angling and hand gathering.

Fishing is catching aquatic animals. Aquatic mammals such as whales have their own terminology "whaling" as differentiated from commercial fishing as does fish farming.

Modern fishing is both a recreational and professional sport.

The total number of fishermen 35 million and fishing provides employment for an estimated 200 million people. In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 13.9 kg with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms.

Fishing History

Fishing is an ancient practice that dates back at least to the Paleolithic period which began about 40,000 years ago.[2] Archaeology features such as shells, discarded fish bones and cave paintings show that sea foods were important for survival and eaten in significant quantities. Hunter-gatherer lifestyle were constantly on the move. There are early examples of permanent settlements (though not necessarily permanently occupied) such as those at Lepenski Vir that are associated with fishing as a major source of food.

The river Nile was full of fish; fresh, salted and dried fish were a staple food for much of the population. The Egyptians had implements and methods for fishing that are illustrated in tomb scenes, drawings, and papyrus documents. Some representations hint at fishing being pursued as a pastime. In India, the Pandyas, a classical Dravidian Tamil kingdom, were known for pearl fishery in the 1st century BC. Their seaport Tuticorin was a deep sea pearl fishing center. The paravas, a Tamil caste developed a rich community because of their pearl trade and fisheries.

Fishing scenes are rarely represented in ancient Greek culture because of the low social status of fishermen. However, Oppian of Corycus, wrote a major treatise on sea fishing, the Halieulica or Halieutika, composed between 177 and 180. This is the earliest work that has survived. Pictorial evidence of Roman fishing comes from mosaics. The Greco-Roman sea god Neptune is depicted as wielding a fishing trident. The Moche people of ancient Peru depicted fisherman in their ceramics.

One of the world's longest trading histories is bringing the fish from Norway to the southern parts of Europe, Italy, Spain and Portugal. It started during the Viking period has been going on for more than 1000 years.

Traditional fishing

Traditional fishing subsistence fishing practices, using arod and tackle, arrows and harpoons, throw nets and drag nets, etc.

Recreational Fishing

Recreational or sport fishing is done for pleasure or competition. Recreational fishing has conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught; typically, these prohibit the use of nets and the catching of fish with hooks not in the mouth. Rods, reels, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits or artificial lures such as spinners or 'dry flies' are used. Angling is catching fish with a hook. Catch and release is also an angling activity.

Big-game fishing describes fishing from boats to catch large open-water species such as tuna, sharks and marlin.

Techniques

There are many techniques for fishing. In spear fishing, the fish is killed using an ordinary spear or a specialized variant thereof. Closely related to spear fishing is bow fishing. Trained animals can assist in fishing; one notable example is Asian cormorant fishing.

Bottom trawling, seining, driftnetting, handlining, longlining, gillnetting and diving are widely used techniques. A recent non-traditional approach using a radio-controlled boat is called remote control fishing.

Tackle

Almost any equipment or gear used when fishing can be called "fishing tackle". Some examples of tackle are lures and bait, lines, rods and reels, nets and trawls, downriggers and outriggers, gaffs and harpoons, clevises, floats,*hooks and rigs can also be used mainly in carp fishing.

Gear that is attached to the end of a fishing line, such as hooks, leaders, swivels, sinkers, leads, tubing and snaps, are all called "terminal tackle"
