Description
Plaice is a flatfish that has its eyes on the right side, which is smooth and brown with numerous characteristic reddish spots. The species is common in the North Sea, from the intertidal zone and down to depths of 250 metres.

The main spawning grounds for Plaice are the Irish Sea and the North Sea south of Dogger Bank. Certain stocks migrate over huge distances.

History
In Norway, commercial plaice fishery started to take off in 1923 when Danish seine nets were introduced and many new fishing grounds were discovered. The main plaice fishing area is the North Sea.

In 1980, minimum size limits were introduced for plaice, but the protection orders have now been lifted. The minimum legal size for plaice caught in Skagerrak is 27 cm; elsewhere it is 29 cm.

Almost all Plaice fishing is commercial using nets, Bottom trawling, beam trawls and seine nets.

Benefits
Plaice is an excellent food fish that is high in B12 and fat-soluble vitamins A and D. The fat content of plaice is generally low but there are variation in the amount of omega-3 fatty acids.
